VPS Server Vs. Dedicated Server: which is better and why?

Introduction

There are many types of servers one can use for business purposes. Two of the most famous are VPS Servers and Dedicated Servers. Both have their upside, downside, and pricing. But people get confused while trying to select one for them. In this blog we will give you a full description and difference between the two.

VPS Servers:

VPS (Virtual Private Server) is a hosting solution that employs virtualization technology to provide you with dedicated (private) resources on a server with numerous customers. VPS is a safer and more dependable choice than shared hosting, which does not provide you with a dedicated server space. You still share a server’s resources with other users when you utilise a VPS.

Unlike shared hosting, however, your site still receives dedicated resources in its part of the server. For example, if the server has 4 GB of RAM, your VPS may receive 1 GB of that 4 GB of RAM. The crucial thing to remember is that you never have to share that 1 GB of RAM with anyone else — it’s all yours. A VPS hosting company divides these resources by using something called a hypervisor to create virtual machines for each client on that server.

Pros:

  • The biggest advantage of using a VPS is its staggering low prices, even though VPS hosing is of two types Managed and Unmanaged, with managed being the better option. The difference in the price of both is pretty low.
  • Dedicated hosting resources are still available to the site, even though you don’t have a full physical server.
  • The enlargement and taking out statistical data of a website is easier when using a VPS, because They are easily upgradable by creating and adjusting a virtual boundry.

Cons:

  • The only major disadvantage of a VPS is the lack of control over the hardware component of the website. The entitle hardware load is taken up by the service provider and they are responsible for anything related to the hardware.
  • Another Con is that, it is more like a rented server. You have to pay the maintenance charge after a month or quarterly.

Dedicated Servers:

A dedicated server, as the name implies, means that the entire physical server is dedicated to your website. Instead of just a portion of the server, like with a VPS, you get the entire thing. In addition to possibly increasing your resources, the main advantage of this strategy is that you have complete control over the physical hardware within your server as well as the software that runs on it.

For example, if you prefer AMD CPUs over Intel processors — you have that amount of control with a dedicated server. You may also control every piece of software installed on that physical device.

Pros:

  • You have the entirety of control on the Server, be it hardware, software or any physical component aimed at the working of a server.
  • Another Advantage is that your website is completely isolated from the service provider. This ensures Privacy of anything that you do to your website, but this still allows all the resources from the service providers to be used in the development on the server.
  • The biggest advantage of a Dedicated server over a VPS is that you have to pay rent but only a few times in a year.

Cons:

  • Even with better facilities than the VPS, a great disadvantage of Dedicated servers is that they are very costly, and also mentioning that the same resources are provided by VPS but at a lower cost, significantly reduces importance of Dedicated servers.
  • Another major Con of Dedicated hosting is that the user has to do all the calculations for the resources required for the running of the server. Due to no interference or help from the service provider, except from the supply of resources, miscalculations can affect the server severely.

Final Conclusion:

VPS hosting services are visibly better than Dedicated hosting due to their low pricing plans with minimum differences between managed and unmanaged hosting services. Also, the interference of the service provider in VPS helps in more functionality and flexibility of the website. You will see that a lot of WordPress websites use VPS hosting services now-a-days, due to its resourceful similarity to dedicated servers but extra ability and pocket-friendly pricing. Yet Dedicated hosting comes into play when you don’t want any other sites to use your resources. In the end we can say that both servers are equally good in either way, depending upon the user’s preference.
