Happiness is a shy bird. If you hunt it, it will fly away. It is better to set a trap for happiness and look for the other way. Pleasure seekers miss it. They are just restless and unsatisfied people who have no inner happiness. They try to seek it in the outer world, wealth, with materialistic mind and thoughts but often fail to find it. It is very common mistake to think that money brings happiness. “if i were rich”, we often sigh. Money is not to be despised; it can do much to make life pleasant yet the rich are sometimes unhappy and the poor sing. So, the source of happiness can’t simply be the wealth and even those who will never be rich can still be happy.
There are some outward conditions that make for the happiness. First of all, it is the good health. The man who is suffering from say fever or chronic indigestion can’t feel very happy, for it is a famous saying, Is life worth living? Yes, but it depends on the Liver! and yet it is no little wonder to see how some invalids rise above their pain and weakness and do keep smiling.
An idle person is rarely a happy man. It is said, “An empty mind is a devil’s workshop”. Most grumblers are lazy people with nothing to occupy their minds and their time.
One should have healthy amusements to fill one’s leisure hours. Games, Sports, Music, Reading etc… are pleasant and wholesome occupations which save one from a lot of brooding and melancholic thoughts and add immensely to the pleasures of life.
The true source of happiness lies within our own selves. Happiness depends not so much on our circumstances as on ourselves. The kingdom of happiness, like the kingdom of heaven, is within us. In selfless kindness and respect to others, in a very clear and positive mind, a clear conscience and upright life, lies the secret of happiness. We should bear in mind the intelligent saying that “Life is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel”.
